Ostara or the Spring Equinox, falls on March 20-21st and is a time to celebrate the coming of Spring, new life all over nature, and the longer days of sunlight.
It is the moment when there is balance, between the hours of light and the darkness as Mother Earth awakens from her long sleep. This sabbat is related to the goddess Eostre, who long ago had a festival in her honor for seven days. This is how the holiday 'Easter' came about, landing on the Sunday after the full moon following the Spring Equinox. That is why Easter is always changing dates every year, depending on the phases of the moon...
It also is a time related to other deities such as Cernunnos; god of the hunt, Gaia; goddess of the Earth, and Flora; the Greek version of Eostre, goddess of fertility. Any symbol of rebirth, youth, new beginnings, nature's abundance and the forest, are also related to this time of year and can be honored as well.
We celebrate a little differently each season, but I thought I would share some of my favorite ways to create some special moments for this sabbat.
1} Egg Ritual-
Hollow out an egg by putting a small hole on the top and bottom, then blowing the yolk out gently into a bowl {as to not waste for later baking}. Decorate it with spring colors and write your manifestation wishes on it with a marker. Add tiny flower seeds into the hole of your local wildflower variety. Take the egg out into your garden or a spare piece of Earth, and dig a small hole. Put your energy and intention into your egg, then place it in the hole. As you cover it up, smash it to release the seeds and your wishes into the Earth's energy. Water it often!
2} Visit an Animal Shelter-
Many of the animals in shelters are neglected and lonely for attention! Go to the shelter and ask what their rules are for visiting and/or volunteering to help out for the day! We have been allowed to help feed animals, play with them in the yards provided, or just snuggle with them in their enclosures. Be careful...you will want to take them all home with you! Post pictures on your social media and spread the word that some fur babies need some happy homes to go to.
3} Make Incense or Infused Oils-
It is always fun to craft during a sabbat, especially with the flowers, herbs and aromas of Spring! Find a good incense or oil recipe and gather all of your ingredients before so you are prepared. Some correlating scents for Ostara are Daffodil, Honeysuckle, Jasmine, Rose, Violet, Magnolia, Ginger, Lotus, Sage and Magnolia. Once you are done, you can burn it during your evening meditation, time at your altar or for an intuitive card reading.
4} Bake Some Moon Cakes-
Moon cakes are one of those fun treats that I only do around sabbats to keep it special, and is a great way to end a feast or to have with some loose leaf herbal tea. Here is my quick recipe for gluten-free, sugar-free moon cakes, with a bit of pumpkin!
3 large eggs {organic pasture raised} • 1 cup organic pumpkin puree • 1/2 cup raw local {kind} honey • 1 tsp pure vanilla extract • 2 cups blanched almond flour • 6 tbsps of tapioca flour • 1 tsp baking soda • 1 tbsp pumpkin spice blend • 1 tsp ground cinnamon 1/4 tsp fine sea salt • 1/4 cup melted coconut oil or ghee
Mix all the wet ingredients together. Mix all the dry ingredients together separately. Slowly mix in the dry with the wet, until it is all smooth. Pour into lined cupcake pan after pre-heating the oven at 350 degrees F (177 degrees C). Bake for 30-45 minutes, checking to see if they are done by stabbing with a fork or toothpick, and making sure it comes out clean. Then remove from the oven and let cool for 15 minutes. Take a glass and flip it over, so you can 'cut away' the crescent part of the moon from each one. You can keep one side as a gibbous, and one side as a crescent, or use the 'gibbous' as a crumble for a cobbler or pie!
5} Create a Ritual-
Use your own imagination, your own words, your own ingredients, to create a ritual that is special just to you! Spirit animals you could incorporate are the snake, rabbit, chick, birds, unicorn, Pegasus, dragon or bring forth the energy of the mermaid! Crystals you can use to support it can be aquamarine, amethyst, rose quartz, moonstone, bloodstone and red jasper. Colors that correlate with Ostara are pastels, light green, blues, yellow and pink, all great for candle dressing or spell casting. Other great ideas to maybe add to your Grimoire or ritual are butterflies, cocoons, bees, the new moon, baskets, sprouting plants, seeds, lambs, eggs, Earth, or anything that represents new life to you!
We hope that you have a blessed Ostara and these ideas inspired you to get ready for a wonderful Spring Equinox!
